Here at the Syracuse office of dentist Dr. Karen Lawitts, we want to help ensure that your oral health is always in great condition. With this in mind, here are some simple guidelines on proper oral care routine habits:

Brush Your Teeth Properly

When brushing your teeth, make sure to do it in no less than two minutes, with roughly 30 seconds spent on each portion of your mouth. Brush each tooth surface including the top chewing surfaces and all sides and paying close attention to the gum line. Don’t forget to brush at least two times every single day and in-between snacks and meals whenever possible. Opt for a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid damaging your teeth and gums.

Floss Your Teeth Thoroughly, But Gently

Flossing once daily will suffice for most people. Use at least 18 inches of floss so you can wrap it around your fingers comfortably. Always follow your teeth’s natural curves to avoid damaging the gums. If you have a difficult time using standard floss, use a water flosser, pick, or other interdental flossers.

Use Fluoridated Mouthwash

Gargle and rinse with mouthwash each time you floss and brush your teeth. Make sure to swish it around for at least 30 seconds before spitting it out.

Don’t Forget to Clean Your Tongue and Other Mouth Surfaces

You can use your toothbrush with some toothpaste or a tongue scraper. Be gentle but thorough with your movements and rinse your mouth after.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

See your dentist in Syracuse, NY, for cleanings and checkups at least every six months or more if you have a high risk for developing oral health problems.

Inspect Your Mouth Every Time You Brush Your Teeth

Inspect your mouth regularly to check for potential abnormalities or issues. On your next dentist visit, you should also ask if you should pay more attention to anything when performing your oral care routine.
